Do you ever have one of those days where everything just goes wrong? You know the type that from the moment you stumble out of bed until the minute you stumble back into it again disaster just looms overhead wringing it’s sweaty hands & waiting to pounce…. I stubb my toe, break 3 nails, crack my knee on the corner of the bed, discover we’ve run out of loo roll whilst ON the loo, burn toast, accidentally empty the contents of my bag all over the kitchen floor, accidentally empty the contents of Emma’s bag all over the kitchen floor, loose the car keys twice… and all this in the space of just 30 minutes. Of course little events like this continued to unfold the ENTIRE day, right up until yesterday evening whilst I’m basking in a glorious hot shower (having just plastered my hair in conditioner) and the water turns icy cold. Yep, one of those days *sobs* I swear, if I was a wine drinker I think I’d have been found hiding under my duvet clutching a large bottle and straw last night.
Have you had one of those days recently? Do humour me in the comments below by reminding me I’m not the only one who’s gone through the mill ladies! *sigh*
However time for a sprinkle of cheer as we move speedily along onto our second sassy blogger of the week… the gorgeous Emma from Toast O Clock. Although this budding beauty & lifestyle blogger is based in Scotland she’s spent most of her younger years growing up in Northern Ireland – always fabulous having someone a little more local on the virtual sofa for a bit of a chatter! So without further ado I’ll stop waffling and just let y’all get on with finding out more about the gorgeous gal herself, don’t forget to stop by her blog and say a huge hello – you’ll adore it! Enjoy 🙂
In only 5 words describe what readers can expect from your blog:
Advice, humour, beauty, truth, personality
What inspired you to start blogging?
For a long time I sat reading other people’s blogs. I found posts about their opinions on products or techniques or brands really useful and so I thought: Maybe my opinion could be useful to someone too? I also thought it could be something really fun as I am a creative person, just not in the typical drawing with pencil on paper type of way – I love designing the look of my blog as much as I love writing the content and I am learning to enjoy the photography element of my blog too.
Tell us about your blog name… what made you decide on it?
My name on the majority of my social media is “toast o’clock” which comes from the time of day (or should I say night) when I get a bit hungry and sneak into the kitchen for toast. It’s usually when I’m up far too late at night, and once my flatmates worked out what I was doing in the kitchen in the middle of the night it became a thing, just like that. My blog title is “My Slice” because I want it to be a place where I can write about my take on things, and also because I think that the link between “slice” and “toast” is just too clever for words – I’m insanely proud of that name.
Do you ever suffer from Blogger’s Block & if so how do you overcome it?
I never run out of ideas for posts but I do sometimes encounter a block of actually wanting to sit down and write a post. The only thing I’ve found to overcome it is to take a small break from blogging and hope that it goes away by itself.
What’s your favourite post to date?
It’s gotta be “15 things I learned during my first year at university” – it reminded me of the amazing year I’ve had and was really fun to write.
Describe your everyday clothes style:
Topshop leggings, brown ankle boots, a pretty top and either my cream or black leather jacket.
What are your current top 3 beauty items?
Bourjois Feutre Eyeliner – my first felt-pen style eyeliner and I have to say it’s made applying eyeliner super easy for a beginner like me.
Maybelline The Falsies Mascara – my go to mascara, I think I’ve found the one!
Rimmel Moisture Renew Lipstick – I love how moisturising these lipsticks are, yet they still have great pigmentation and lasting time. Glam Plum Fulham and Vintage Pink are the shades I own but I’m looking to expand my collection as I love them so much!
How do you like to relax & unwind after a stressful day?
I like to take all of my makeup off, pop a facemask on and get in the bath. Maybe paint my nails, and actually take the time to condition my hair… just have a proper pamper really!
Describe your ideal Saturday night:
A takeaway meal with the girls, then us all rushing around getting dolled up in dresses and heels, then out to a bar for drinks followed by a club where we dance our wee hearts out and drink more than we should!
What do you do to relax?
I have a playlist on my Spotify called “Breathe” which is filled with some of my favourite songs that are a bit slower and really calm me down.
Everyone has their bad habits, what’s yours?
Procrastinating a ridiculous amount, if it’s something not-major (as in not university work) that can be done tomorrow then it’s getting done tomorrow. Or the next day. Or the day after that. Or next week sometime. I’m also really bad at avoiding impulse purchases when I’m in a bad mood – to me retail therapy calms me down.
What’s your most cherished childhood memory?
My family and I went on holiday to Menorca when I was a kid and I loved floating around the pool at the resort on this inflatable dolphin we bought.
What was your favourite school subject?
Science, particularly biology. I loved learning how the human body worked, and that’s why I chose to do my degree in biochemistry, which I really enjoy.
What’s your dream job?
I’d love to be the head of a scientific research laboratory – I don’t want to be sat in the lab all of the time, I want to be in business meetings and getting funding and all of that as well as doing all the cool stuff in my lab coat and gloves and goggles.
Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
So, five years from now I’ll be 23…I’d love to have graduated from university with my master’s degree in biochemistry. I’ll hopefully be in a relationship, and (fingers crossed) I’ll have either a kitten or a French bulldog, or if I’m incredibly lucky I’ll have both. I hope that I’ll still be blogging too.
What top 5 things are on your bucket list?
I have a pretty substantial bucket list – just after I turned 18 I wrote down 100 things I wanted to do during my adult life – so here are the highlights:
To get married and become a mum
To travel around the world and visit all seven continents
To own a baby grand piano
To get a PhD
To have a cat and a French bulldog
What’s your biggest achievement to date?
Throughout high school I got straight A’s in all of my exams and then got an unconditional offer to my first choice university. It took a hell of a lot of work but I’m so proud of myself.
Who inspires you?
No one in particular!
Do you have a favourite inspirational quote?
I don’t have one favourite quote, no, in fact I have inspirational quotes everywhere – on post-it’s on my walls, on the front of notebooks, as my laptop background… but I couldn’t pick just one.
What top tips would you give to someone who is thinking of starting their own blog?
Just get started already! I wish I had started mine sooner. And don’t be afraid to change things about your blog all over the place at the beginning until you get it just the way you want it.
